A well-lit bathroom goes beyond mere functionality - it creates an oasis of tranquility and relaxation. Designing lighting for bathrooms requires careful consideration as bathrooms serve both practical and relaxation purposes, necessitating a balance between task, ambient, and accent lighting. Transform your space into a spa-like sanctuary of ambiance and elegance with our expert tips.
1. Consider Functionality:
Bathrooms demand lighting that ensures clear visibility for grooming tasks, makeup application and shaving, so bright, uniform, and shadow-free illumination is crucial around the mirror area. This is typically achieved through fixtures placed on either side of the mirror or a backlit mirror itself – ensure lights are placed at eye-level to avoid shadows. You can also install wall sconces on either side of your mirror to ensure even illumination and minimise shadows on the face. Install even lighting to create a well-lit and functional space.

2. Make Sure It’s Waterproof & Splashproof:
Water and moisture resistance are paramount when selecting lighting fixtures for bathrooms so look for fixtures with appropriate Ingress Protection (IP) ratings, to prevent damage and ensure safety. IP65 rated lighting is dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets, making it suitable for use in shower enclosures or above a bath. IP44 rated lighting, on the other hand, is protected against splashing water, making it suitable for use outside the specified 'zones' of a bathroom (Zone 1 and Zone 2). All our bathroom lights are IP20, IP44 and IP65 rates, which means they’re suitable for use across the home, from bathrooms to gardens.

3. Minimal Downlights:
The size and shape of the bathroom will determine how many downlights you can install, but generally you should keep it minimal. Pay attention to the placement of your lights to avoid glare and shadows on the face. Ensure that other fixtures are strategically placed to evenly illuminate the entire space.
4. Install Statement Pieces:
Outside of Zone 2, which is typically at least 60cm away from the bath or shower, there is no requirement for waterproof lighting. This opens up a world of possibilities for statement lighting pieces, such as chandeliers or decorative pendant lights, which can transform the aesthetics of the bathroom while providing an elegant focal point.
5. Incorporate A Mix Of Ambient, Task And Accent Lighting:
Opt for a combination of different light sources to achieve a balanced and layered effect. Combine overhead fixtures with vanity lights, wall sconces, and even recessed lights to create depth and adaptability in your bathroom.
6. Use Lighting With Similar Finishes:
Whilst all the lighting fixtures don’t have to match, products with the same finishes maintain consistency and unity throughout your bathroom design. For example, brass fixtures work particularly well when paired with brass taps and door knobs. Brass is also a versatile finish, and blends well with other bath accessories.
