While it’s cold, wet and dark in the winter months, January is the time to make the most of being indoors and redecorate your home interior, the New Year is a great time to rethink your décor and is the perfect way to cure your January blues. In this blog, we’re going to look at how to brighten your home this year and give you some blue interior inspiration, who knew blue could look this good?!
Light Up Your Home
Lighting in interior design is of great importance, having more of an impact than you may think, as it can affect our mood significantly. Lighting can create the picture-perfect space whether you choose vintage wall lights, pendants or flush mounts, but there are also scientific reasons as to why illuminating your space is important.

During the darker, winter months many people can suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or winter depression due to the lack of light. Studies have shown that having brighter, sufficient light can have a positive impact on moods which help to ease SAD. Having warmer lights in your home can combat the feelings of SAD as you’re exposed to sufficient light which allows us to feel energised and happy. During the winter months it can be challenging to get outside in the daylight, therefore having good lighting in your home will make sure you are getting enough of it, even though it is artificial.

Beat the Blues with Blue
It may sound odd that you can beat the January blues with blue, but that’s precisely what you should do! There are plenty of shades of blue, whether you opt for a moody blue, powder blue, navy or teal, there’s a shade suitable for every room. Blue represents cleanliness, tranquillity and strength, think of the sea and sky, it’s a colour that relaxes us and makes us feel at peace. Plus, the colour blue has long been connected with royalty, so introducing a splash of the colour into your home can add a luxurious feel that’s fit for a Queen!

Go for Dramatic Blues
Dramatic, moody blues add more character to any space, creating a warm and cosy feel. In 2018 we saw navy and brass take over our interiors, it was seen as a risk, but they both work seamlessly together to add character to any given space. Warmer toned metals add a touch of luxury and elegance to any space and interior designers have been opting for brass touches rather than cooler toned metals. When paired with navy, it creates an even richer look; the classic colour combination is one that won’t become outdated.

Warm it up with Wood
Industrial design heavily focuses on natural materials, including wood. Adding wood into your interior design instantly adds warmth and cosiness to your décor. Just as incorporating blue into your interior, adding organic and natural elements also brings a sense of calm and tranquillity by cosying the space up. Industrial lights work incredibly well with natural elements and add to the rustic looking décor.
Channel Rustic Charm
Think about being in the middle of the forest, in a chalet with a warmly lit fire. Channel rustic charm by incorporating light tones, from neutral coloured walls to shabby looking light wood, pair with metallic lights for the ultimate industrial look. Light coloured rooms create an airy feel and have been proven to uplift your mood, the perfect cure for January blues!

Combine Textures
Each texture brings something different to a room, finding the textures for you is key as it brings a slice of your personality to your space. Incorporating a variety of textures will give the décor some depth and bring the overall feel of the room together. An easy way to include more textures in your décor is by adding some fur or colourful blankets to your space to give your room some character, or some statement wall art with contrasting cushions for the ultimate chic look.
Placing a rug in any room will be an easy way to spruce up your space and add some depth; not only do rugs look good, but they also add comfort, warmth and can decrease noise. There are plenty of styles and textures to choose from, whether you opt for an Oriental or Persian rug, a fur runner or a grey weaved mat.

Glam it Up
The best way to get over the January blues is to glam up your décor! Adding metallic touches is the perfect way to transform your abode into an enchanting space. Copper lights are the ideal way to glam up your room, adding copper accents accentuate your décor and add a touch of elegance. The warmly toned metal is cosy and adds a hint of retro without being too flashy.
Go bold with brass; the timeless metal has been used for many years as it adds a touch of elegance and class to any given space, brass is easily paired with many colours and trends, making it a fantastic investment.
