Designing a truly eye-catching space like this requires plenty of planning and creativity - but the results are sure to be incredible! To help you make the most of this stunning trend, we share some design tips and ideas.

What Is Monochromatic?

Monochromatic design revolves around the use of one colour in an interior design.

However, many monochromatic spaces are not rigidly styled with a single colour and instead use the focus colour to refine the room’s design. Different hues and shades are used to create a diverse but cohesive palette, allowing you to create a liveable space.

When you are strategic about the kinds of shades and decor pieces you include, a monochromatic design will convey harmony and depth.

Why Monochromatic?

A monochromatic colour scheme could refer to pale neutrals, vibrant blues or playful pinks - the colour and hues you choose will set the stage for the shapes and textures that make up your space.

Embracing the monochromatic trend is all about making bold choices and showing your personality through the intentional use of colour. Even when you’re limited in the base colours you use, there is so much room to get creative!

How can you incorporate the monochromatic style into your interiors?

Start Small

  • Try a monochrome design in smaller spaces like bathrooms.
  • Use subtle tones to begin with.
  • Don’t worry about having every tiny detail in your room match an exact colour scheme.

Using different tones and variations of the same colour can actually make a room look larger. So, beginning your adventure with monochromes in a smaller room is not only a great option because it poses less daunting design prospects, but it also helps play into the strengths of the trend.

It is a good idea to start with more subtle colours. By this, we mean painting your walls in a paler shade of your chosen colour. This way, even if you decide to switch up the theme later, you are not stuck with boldly painted walls that are more challenging to design around.

Neutrals

  • Go sleek with a neutral base of white, black, grey or beige.
  • Opt for neutrals in bedrooms.
  • Combine a neutral palette with plenty of textures.

Choosing neutrals like white, beige and black as the base for your monochromatic theme will help you create a calming and clean feel. This is especially effective in bedrooms, where you want to escape to a relaxing, quiet space.

White seems like an easy colour to decorate with. However, when you remove other colours, it’s essential to focus on the texture, tones and lines of the space to create visual interest.

Natural materials such as wood and metals are the perfect way to add texture and comfort to your space, helping to create a cosy bedroom escape.

Highlights, Statements and Contrasts

  • Use light fixtures as highlights to complement your core colour.
  • Go for bold, statement pieces like vases, artwork or chairs in a contrasting colour.
  • Use patterned wallpaper to make a dynamic statement.

When you have established a strong base colour theme, you can add little contrasts throughout the room. Hints of another colour or metallic finish can further show off the depth and character of your hues, whether you choose green, pink, black or anything else.

Choosing a statement piece in a contrasting colour can be a great option for those that are daunted by the prospect of using a single colour.

Using various textures and patterns, whether this means through furniture, textiles or wallpaper, will also help to give your space a sense of contrast and luxury.

Black Dining Rooms

The dining room is a perfect place to make a bold statement - it’s a room you’ll likely use every day but is not somewhere you need to be overtly calming.

Using deep blacks or other darker colours like navy in your dining room helps to create a dramatic space full of flair and sophistication. Lighter highlights will also look particularly striking against a black palette.
