When interior designer Tara Ashwell discovered a dilapidated Georgian townhouse in Rotherfield, East Sussex, she saw beyond its worn façade. What others might have dismissed, she recognised as full of potential.
Over 18 months, Tara reimagined the four-bedroom property into a warm and contemporary family home. The transformation opened up a series of small, fragmented rooms, introducing flow, light, and a renewed sense of life.
At the heart of the home sits the kitchen - a striking open-plan space framed by a glass extension, balancing heritage character with modern ease. Here, lighting plays a pivotal role in creating atmosphere and warmth.
Three brass dome pendants from Industville are suspended above the island, their soft glow accentuating the cabinetry’s rich tones and brass detailing. Along the walls, pewter cone lights add contrast, their subtle shimmer tying the period features to the home’s new contemporary rhythm.
Tara explains, “Every home tells a story, and my approach is to make sure that story comes through in the design. For this project, the challenge was modernising the home while keeping its history alive.”
That history is embedded in the smallest details - even a rediscovered water well beneath the kitchen floor, believed to date back to Rotherfield’s Saxon past.

Adding some warming colour to this north facing utility room was definitely a good idea. If I could change the granite easily and cheaply, I would. But I can't, so it has to stay. At least for now !
We colour drenched the room. I love how the colour dominates, which I feel makes my vintage paraphernalia pop, and this colour goes so well with dark wood.

Master bedroom is finally coming along. After a 21 week wait we finally have our bedroom furniture. Minus one bit due Friday 😅
Our kitchen is from a range by stori_collection that is stocked by a lot of kitchen companies. Fitting an "off the shelf" and not bespoke handmade kitchen doesn't mean there is no flexibility and it can be more budget friendly. I didn't want wall units but love my counter top nook where I can hide appliances.
This run of units is 580cm in length (16ft) and is the working side of the kitchen. I designed the mix of drawers and cupboards to balance but honestly I think drawers are much more useful and organized.

Morning everyone! Some shots of the Library bathroom at thelittlewildfarm that I took during the brief spell of afternoon sun yesterday.
This room really comes into its own with a bit of Autumn styling.
For the rest of the weekend I’m just going to be ridiculously painting up the kitchen, even though when we eventually get planning permission it will be partially pulled down and reconfigured.
As winter comes I just really need it to feel a bit more together and cosy!
Does anyone else do that? Decorate, even though you know it’s eventually all going to have to go?

bathroom update;
4 years ago i decided to start renovating this room...i chipped the tiles off the wall and we ordered a new bath and sink. i painted the walls dark and then nothing happened for 4 years 🤦🏼♀️.
however recently we’ve pulled our finger out and made it a slightly nicer space! i’ve gone for a lovely soft beige colour and painted the cladded walls to match. i also made some art for the walls 🐚

i still have tiles to order...i’ve picked them, just can’t bring myself to click the order button as they want £70 for delivery! when the tiles only cost £230 that seems crazy....or am i just being really cheap? i’ll share them on stories...
