CASE STUDY: Rotherfield Residence by @taraashwelldesigns
When interior designer Tara Ashwell discovered a dilapidated Georgian townhouse in Rotherfield, East Sussex, she saw beyond its worn façade. What others might have dismissed, she recognised as full of potential.
Over 18 months, Tara reimagined the four-bedroom property into a warm and contemporary family home. The transformation opened up a series of small, fragmented rooms, introducing flow, light, and a renewed sense of life.
At the heart of the home sits the kitchen - a striking open-plan space framed by a glass extension, balancing heritage character with modern ease. Here, lighting plays a pivotal role in creating atmosphere and warmth.
Three brass dome pendants from Industville are suspended above the island, their soft glow accentuating the cabinetry’s rich tones and brass detailing. Along the walls, pewter cone lights add contrast, their subtle shimmer tying the period features to the home’s new contemporary rhythm.
Tara explains, “Every home tells a story, and my approach is to make sure that story comes through in the design. For this project, the challenge was modernising the home while keeping its history alive.”
That history is embedded in the smallest details - even a rediscovered water well beneath the kitchen floor, believed to date back to Rotherfield’s Saxon past.
Founder of Industville, Mara Miller, adds, “The kitchen is such a natural setting for our crafted designs. It’s where beauty and function must coexist. What makes this project special is the harmony of tones and textures, where every material enhances the sense of warmth and connection.”

1960s Reno Continued…

Soft light, natural rhythm.
Our Travertine Pendants cast two perfect pools of light across the dining table, grounding the open-plan space with warmth and balance. A few candles in the centre would complete the scene, adding a gentle sense of atmosphere as day turns to evening.

When people say grey is out and too cold… We beg to differ! It’s all in the shade. 🩶
This lovely, warm, Taupe Grey shaker kitchen is so cosy and inviting. With warm LED lighting there’s not an inch of coldness in here! It’s made even softer by the walls in farrowandball Skimming Stone, quartz stone worktops by granite_kitchen_services with a warm golden vein, and paired with a herringbone wood floor for oodles of warmth and texture. A beautiful, simple kitchen to relax and spend lots family time in.
There’s a quiet poetry to this space.
Soft light settles on brass fittings and deep navy tones, giving the room a gentle sense of rhythm. The textures, the reflections, the stillness, each detail plays its part in creating calm.

Hurrah to the extra hour in bed this morning, but hasn’t it been grey and gloomy this week. It makes you realise how imperative lighting is, especially now the clocks have gone back! We often find that lighting doesn’t get the attention it deserves, yet it truly has the power to make or break a scheme.
Function, form, and performance must come together through carefully layered lighting to create the perfect atmosphere, be it day or night, rain or shine, summer or winter.
A beautifully balanced space combines three key layers:
- Ambient lighting for a soft base glow
- Task lighting for practicality
- Accent lighting to add depth and highlight features
And of course, technical details like bulb temperature, dimming, and smart controls all play a vital role in creating flexibility and comfort.
Here’s one gorgeous wall light from Industville, part of a cohesive lighting scheme that brings this space beautifully to life.

Practical doesn’t have to mean plain.
Hallways, boot rooms, and utilities can carry just as much intention as the main living spaces, layered light, natural textures, and thoughtful detail turning function into atmosphere.
A welcoming example from @figtree.farm , where every corner feels designed to be lived in.

We’re quietly proud to share that we’ve been named finalists in not one, but two categories at this year’s northerndesignawards ;
• Best Commercial Interior Design Practice
&
• Interior Architecture – Private Residence (Interior & FF&E)
Two contrasting categories that perfectly reflect who we are: a studio that moves fluidly between residential and commercial design. Different in scale and purpose, yet guided by the same quiet strength and attention to detail that defines our work.
Soft light. Simple moments.
A calming workspace that feels as considered as it looks. Warm wall lights create focus where it’s needed, while gentle accents and candlelight bring balance.
Save for later if your desk could use a little mood lift.

Adding some warming colour to this north facing utility room was definitely a good idea. If I could change the granite easily and cheaply, I would. But I can't, so it has to stay. At least for now !
We colour drenched the room. I love how the colour dominates, which I feel makes my vintage paraphernalia pop, and this colour goes so well with dark wood.
This is Block Print Yellow. i have tagged the brand.
The newly launched refillables from Bower Collective look perfectly matched too. I do love this brand, so I tagged them in.
I have ordered a new dark wood lamp can't wait for that to arrive!
He has heard me mention that our bedroom needs warming up too, he didn't say 'no', not that it would stop me. I make a start and he usually joins in. He loves a few winter projects 🥰 who doesn't !!

This Brighton kitchen renovation was designed for balance — between drama and calm. Working with the clients we walked through a number of design interactions.
The striking marble surfaces bring movement and light, while the deep green cabinetry anchors the space with quiet sophistication.
Warm brass accents, reeded glass, and touches of oak add texture and warmth — creating a layered, timeless interior that feels both contemporary and lived-in.
Bon weekend!

There’s a quiet reverence in this space.
The play of shadow and light gives each piece its own presence, like objects displayed with care in a gallery.
The pendants hover above the table as if suspended in stillness, their sculptural forms adding weight and poetry to the room. Paired with raw textures and simple vessels, the effect is contemplative, a dining space that feels almost ceremonial.
