Loving your Home with Interior Design: Thoughts from Mara Miller

What does it mean to truly love your home? For me, it’s never been about chasing trends or for perfection. It’s about creating a space that feels like an extension of who you are—a place that nurtures your wellbeing, sparks joy, and evolves alongside you. Your home should be more than just a backdrop; it should be a partner in your daily life.

Why Loving Your Home Matters

I think we often underestimate the power of our surroundings. A space can energise you in the morning, offer solace after a long day, or simply bring a smile to your face. Loving your home isn’t about having the perfect sofa or the trendiest paint colour. It’s about creating an atmosphere that supports you, reflects your values, and feels authentic.

Small Changes, Big Impact

For me, it starts with paying attention. I’ve always believed in taking a moment to really see your space before making any changes. What do you love about it? What’s not working? Sometimes it’s not about buying something new; it’s about moving a chair to catch the morning light or swapping a harsh overhead light for a softer lamp. Little shifts like these can change how a room feels—and how you feel in it.

I’ve always been drawn to spaces that feel layered and personal. Colour, for example, can transform a room. I’m not one for rules when it comes to choosing a palette—I prefer to let intuition lead. Maybe it’s a shade from a favourite piece of art or the memory of a place that made you happy. What matters is that it resonates with you.

The Emotional Power of Lighting

Lighting is another element I never take for granted. A well-lit room isn’t just practical; it’s emotional. Layering different types of light—from ambient to task to accent—creates depth and mood. And adding natural touches, whether it’s a few potted plants or a bouquet of fresh flowers, brings life to a space in a way nothing else can.

Texture and Mindfulness

Texture, too, has its own magic. Combining materials that contrast and complement each other—a soft throw on a sleek sofa, or a woven rug on polished wood—makes a space feel warm and inviting. And when you choose sustainable materials, there’s an added sense of care and thoughtfulness that’s hard to replicate.

Of course, it’s not just about what you add but what you let go of. Decluttering isn’t about minimalism for its own sake; it’s about creating space for what truly matters. When you hold onto things that bring you joy or serve a purpose, and release the rest with gratitude, your home becomes lighter—physically and emotionally.

Final Thoughts

At the heart of it all, loving your home means making it a reflection of your life and values. It’s not about impressing anyone else; it’s about creating a space where you feel at ease, inspired, and connected. For me, that’s the essence of good design: spaces that don’t just look beautiful but feel meaningful.
